This site contains over 30 lesson plans for grades 3-8 and provides useful background information, interdisciplinary experiments and lessons, and further reading for both students and educators. The appropriate grade level is clearly identified on each lesson.

Alliance to Save Energy index of environmental (including air issues) lesson. Organized by grade level and subject, includes lessons about acid rain and air pollution, as well as tangentially related subjects such as energy efficiency and fuels. Environmental Education Center (Including Project A.I.R.E.)

      This EPA site for teachers includes lesson plans, activities, experiments, background information, and community action possibilities. Also links to Project A.I.R.E.

Project A.I.R.E (Air Information Resources for Educators) was developed by EPA to focus the attention of elementary, junior high, and high school students on air pollution issues. The units in this package encourage students to think more critically and creatively about air pollution problems and the alternatives for resolving them. Topics covered include: air quality, rainforests, radon, the creation of environmental laws, the greenhouse effect and ozone.

Sunwise School Program

Sunwise is an EPA project about UV radiation and stratospheric ozone depletion. Grades K-8, toolkit provides curricular materials and ideas, as well as most of the materials needed for the hands-on activities.

This website contains over 20 lesson plans and additional information from Washington University in St. Louis Biology Department. The lessons are divided into Chemistry, Environmental Science, and Computer Skills and also include concept maps and suggested readings. To reach the ozone curriculum resources follow the Natural Science Learning Center link then the Science Outreach link and then the Curriculum link (it is worth the effort).

The Global Warming Project

"The Global Warming Project" is an interdisciplinary set of activities and lessons designed for grades 7-10. It is produced in cooperation with The Center for Learning Technologies in Urban Schools and includes a logical progression of background information, lessons, and extensions.       

The Clean Air Challenge

The Clean Air Challenge is produced by the Enterprise for Education as a resource for K-12 educators. It includes online games, student activities, and project ideas and also provides information about trainings and workshops for educators interested in learning more about how to teach air quality issues.

Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools

      Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools Kit is provided cost free through a partnership of between several educational and environmental groups. It is an action plan for improving air quality in schools and contains supporting lessons, information, and materials adaptable for K-12 classrooms.

Great Explorations in Math and Science (GEMS)

Great Explorations in Math and Science (GEMS) is a series of teacher resources from Lawrence Hall of Science at Berkeley. Air related topics include Acid Rain, Environmental Detectives, and Global Warming and the Greenhouse Effect. Teacher guides cost $18.00 and provide background reading, lessons and activities, and sources of more information. Ranges from grade 5-8.

South Cost AQMD enrichment resources

South Coast Air Quality Management District kids page provides activities, information, and addresses at which an Air quality Teacher's Kit and the environmental curriculum "Think Earth" can be obtained.

Global Change Education Resource Guide

Curriculum and resource materials developed by NOAA and containing air-related units on Natural Climate Variability, Greenhouse Effect, and Ozone Depletion. Provides extensive background reading and well-organized interdisciplinary activities and experiments for grades K-12. Request from MFCA website.

Alternative Transportation Fuels

Interdisciplinary lessons from the Texas Education Agency, Railroad Commission of Texas, and the Texas General Land Office. Section on Air Pollution contains 15 lessons ranging from grades 6-12. Essential Elements and TAAS standards are clearly labeled for each lesson. Several opposing viewpoints are presented and students are encouraged to draw their own conclusions. Request from MFCA website or agencies contributing to the curriculum.

20  A&WMA Education Center (Educational Materials Catalogue)

The Air & Waste Management Association education center provides information about teaching air quality and air pollution related issues. Sample lesson plan is available and more lesson plans (starting at $30 for a book of 15 activities) can be purchased under the Public Education and Outreach publications link. Resource Guides available for K-12 in both English and Spanish.

Project Globe

Project GLOBE is an interdisciplinary education program through which primary and secondary students across the country compile data about local conditions and can use the resulting data sets in classroom activities and student projects. The Atmospheric Investigation segment focuses on meteorology and air pollution and is a great lab exercise. GLOBE also provides materials and trainings for educators and is most appropriate for grades 6-12.

Bullfrog Films

A list of fairly pricey (more than $50) but quality films about education topics including, Atmosphere, Air Pollution, Global Warming, Ecology, and the Environment. Videos can be rented or purchased, and there is a discount available for grass roots or activist groups. Appropriate grad level varies by title.
