Frequently Asked Questions

1.  What is Mothers for Clean Air? (back up to the top)

Mothers for Clean Air (MfCA) is a young 501(c)(3) membership organization concerned about air pollution and its effects on children’s health.  We are committed to educate ourselves and the public about Houston’s air quality and to keep state and local government, industry and consumers focused on obtaining and maintaining cleaner air for our children.

2.  What does Mothers for Clean Air  (MfCA) do? (back up to the top)

Mothers for Clean Air provides public information on Houston’s air quality through a quarterly newsletter, quarterly meetings, guest speakers, the media and public events. We provide input from a community perspective to local and state agencies working to reduce air pollution and protect public health. MfCA conducts a project in day care centers called “No Ozone” that minimizes young children’s exposure to ozone and has proposed a similar project for elementary schools.  MfCA also builds chapter organizations in communities with high levels of air pollution.  We work with the residents to help them educate themselves about particular hazards in their neighborhood and what can be done about them.

3.  What makes Mothers for Clean Air different from the Sierra Club and the Galveston-Houston Association for Smog Prevention (GHASP)? (back up to the top)

The Sierra Club has many focuses.  It is concerned with air, water, soil, trees, recycling, hazardous waste disposal, land use, endangered species, and resource conservation.  It sponsors outings and field trips.  The Galveston-Houston Association for Smog Prevention (GHASP) focuses only on air, but is concerned chiefly with legal and technical issues.  Mothers for Clean Air emphasizes the health aspects of air pollution, especially as they affect children.  MfCA involves itself in policy-making decisions at all levels of government.

4.  How can I become a member of Mothers for Clean Air? (back up to the top)

Our brochure and newsletters contain membership forms.  Mothers for Clean Air has no membership fees, but we do encourage members to make an annual contribution of $20 or whatever you feel you can afford.  You may also join online or by calling 713/526-0110.

5.  Do I have to be a mother to join? (back up to the top)

You do not need to be a mother, a grandmother, or even an aunt to join.  Membership is open to men and women, of every race and ethnicity, and every income level.

6.  Is my donation tax deductible? (back up to the top)

Mothers for Clean Air is a federal tax-exempt nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization.  All contributions are tax deductible.

7.  How can I become involved in Mothers for Clean Air? (back up to the top)

Once you become a member, you will begin receiving our quarterly newsletter, Clearing the Air, and notices of quarterly meetings.  But even before you attend a meeting, you can use the information from Mothers for Clean Air to reduce the amount of air pollution in our area.  You may also find that you would like to volunteer or become active by starting a chapter in your community.
