Mothers for Clean
Air is a non-profit, membership organization concerned with
air pollution in the Houston-Galveston area and its effects
on children's health. Mothers for Clean Air serves as a collective
voice to keep state and local government, industry and consumers
focused on obtaining and maintaining cleaner air for our children.
Mothers for Clean
Air builds chapter organizations in communities with high
levels of air pollution and empowers residents to identify,
prioritize, and begin to solve their environmental justice
issues.

Our
Air
|
- The Houston-Galveston
area has exceeded the federal health standard for ozone
since the 1970's.
- In 1999, 2000, 2004 and 2005, the Houston-Galveston area surpassed Los Angeles for
the most days of unhealthy ozone.
- The highest
ozone levels in the nation were recorded in the Houston-Galveston
area for six of the past ten years.
- Harris County
leads the nation in emissions of cancer causing chemicals
released into the air and water.
- Preliminary
monitoring of very tiny pieces of dust and soot indicates
that the Houston-Galveston area will not achieve new federal
health regulations for fine particulate matter.

Our
Children
|
|
There
are 900,000 children in Harris County alone who are at risk
of the health effects from the pollutants in the air. Children
are more vulnerable to air pollution than adults because they
- spend more time
outdoors than adults
- are usually
outdoors most in the summer when air pollution levels are
highest
- are usually
more active when outside
- normally breathe
more rapidly than adults
- are prone to
mouth breathing at rest and at play
- have lungs
that are still developing
- have immature
immune systems.
